Sisterhood
Ask any
member of Sigma Kappa & she will say that the most important part of
being in a sorority is sisterhood. The Theta Beta chapter’s greatest strength
is our sisterhood, something that is never taken lightly. It’s apparent to
anyone on campus since you can always find a group of Sigmas laughing &
having fun.
Sisterhood
isn’t something that’s easy to come by; it takes trust, commitment, and the
willingness to accept people for who they are. The chapter has sisterhood
retreats & various activities during informal meetings that help all our
members get to know each other.
The most
important time for the sisters to learn what sisterhood really means is
during their pledge period. Pledging is a six week period where, after
Recruitment, new members go through the Promise Program, a National pledge
program that all Sigma Kappas go through. The program teaches new members the
history of Sigma Kappa, about the National organization, but most importantly
allows them the chance to get to know their new sisters. More information can
be found on the Promise Program at this link.
Service
The Theta Beta
chapter participates in several philanthropies, including the Main Sea Coast Missionary Society,
Gerontology, Alzheimer’s research, Inherit
the Earth, and the Kelly Salamone Foundation.
Activities include:
- Collecting
canned food & clothing for the Main Sea Coast Missionary Society.
- Participating
in the annual Memory Walk for Alzheimer’s research.
- Singing
Christmas songs at local nursing homes.
- Beach
clean-ups.
- Selling
lolli-pops for Alzheimer’s research.
- Potting
violets for the elderly.
- Hosting
car wash fundraisers.
- Holding
an annual candlelight vigil for Kelly Salamone.
Scholarship
All
active sisters of Sigma Kappa must maintain a 2.5 GPA. Theta Beta is very
proud to have a consistently high overall GPA of over 3.0. Sigma Kappa
recognizes that women are in college to learn, first and foremost. The Theta
Beta chapter offers a scholarship program to help teach members how to study
properly, pairs up sisters to study together, and rewards those sisters that
achieve high test scores and high GPAs. A Scholarship Banquet is also held at
the end of the year to recognize those sisters that showed exceptional
academic achievement.
Social
What
would a sorority be if it wasn’t for all the social activities that we
participate in? The Theta Beta chapter has exchanges with the various
fraternities on campus, participates in Greek Week & Homecoming
activities, hosts our annual Winter Formal, & generally goes to most ULV
sporting & social activities.
Sigma Kappa’s
can also be found playing an active role as members of CAB, Leadership Scholars,
Orientation Week Leaders, Spotlight Weekend Leaders, American Marketing
Association, Collegiate Panhellenic Association, ULV Society of Accountants, Order
of Omega, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Latino Student Forum, Alpha Chi
Honor Society, Dance team, RA’s, RHA’s, and ARC. Other sisters are giving it
their all on ULV women’s athletic teams such as soccer, volleyball, swimming
& diving, and track & field. In addition to taking active roles at
ULV our sisters take an active role in our community, like Sandy Fernandez,
Miss La Verne 2006.
